Memory and Amnesia resources
Introduction to Memory and Forgetting
• Remembering and Forgetting A 26 min video presenting a general psychology level introduction to the psychology of memory and learning, including the history of memory research, memory terms, and mnemonic devices. Presented by the Annenberg Learner Teacher Resources Discovering Psychology series.
How memory works in the brain
• Memory and the Hippocampus A short and informative (1 page) excerpt on the role of the hippocampus in memory from
the Annenberg Learner Resources online Neurobiology textbook.
• How Memory Works The first portion of this 10 min. video clip discusses the famous case of H.M. The second part (5:24) describes the neurochemistry (in lay terms) behind the consolidation of information into long term memory
Amnesia Cases of a Neurological Origin
Clive Wearing The Mind series presents the case of Clive Wearing through two short videos. These are highly recommended as one can observe the behaviors of a person with a complete anterograde amnesia that occurred after viral encephalitis affected both hippocami and portions of his frontal lobes. Videos can be watched through the Annenberg Learner Teacher Resources under The Mind teaching modules. When you get to the page scroll down to see--

11. Clive Wearing, Part 2: Living Without Memory
H.M. Arguably the most famous case of neurologically based amnesia studied by neurologists and neuropsychologists. H.M. had both his hippocampi surgically removed due to seizures. See how H.M. contributed to the science of memory during his life, and how his brain is being studied after his death. See H.M.'s case described, as well as the consolidation of information into long term memory (5:24) in this excellent 10 min segment from NOVA science now: How Memory Works
Mike The Brain Series presents the video case of Mike, who has significant, but not complete, anterograde amnesia, following an accident and seizures in high school that affected his hippocampi. This video is recommended as it describes Mike's memory problems. It also discussed the brain science behind how memories are consolidated in the brain through Long Term Potentiation (LTP), although, since this was done in the early 90's the science has now evolved. This 10 minute clip can be watched through the Annenberg Learner Teacher Resources under The Brain teaching modules.
